Catherine Ford was born Bloomsbury in London. Since her father's departure the family, it was managed by her mom, grandmother, and godparents. When she was a young girl Ford experienced anxiety related to an obsessional disorder. Ford started to become attracted to acting when she was a teenager and enrolled in the National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted into the Sylvia Young Theatre School. However, after only a month, she decided that it wasn't for her. Ford rather than applying for admission to Central School of Speech and Drama and winning a placement after her third try made an application and secured a place at Central School of Speech and Drama. Shaun Dingwall was one of Ford's fellow students. The actor was later to play frequent roles on the show as Pete Tyler and Doctor Who. Ford was able to graduate in 1993. However, she already made a TV appearance in a 1992 episode of Surgical Spirit. She adopted the name Catherine Tate. Tate was a part of such television shows as The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London Burning. The stage was her main focus, and joined the company's season 2000-2001. But Tate quickly began gaining recognition for her stand-up comedic performances that she incorporated into her resume in the year 1996.
