Rachel is required to look into the background of Samara Morgan when her son becomes ill with a mysterious illness. Ruth asks Rachel Keller who is an investigative journalist, to discover the reason for Katie's death. Rachel is informed by Ruth, her sister, that she has discovered Katie's damaged body in the closet. She also divulges that Katie was killed by an attack on her heart. Katie's close friends recount to Rachel the tale of the cursed videotape legend and Katie's friend Becca being confined for witnessing Katie die. Katie's boyfriend and two friends died in strange accidents that same night around 10 pm. Rachel travels from Shelter Mountain Inn to Cabin 12 where Katie and her friends looked at the tape that had been cursed. Rachel is able to locate the tape and starts watching it, then the phone rings. Rachel hears a voice utter "seven days". Rachel is seeking help from her ex-boyfriend Noah Clay, a video analyst. Then, Rachel discovers that Aidan, her son with Noah has watched the tape as Noah calls her and tells her that he is convinced by her. Rachel examines the tape in order to determine the location of the lighthouse. It was on Moesko Island. Anna Morgan, a cursed horse breeder was on the tape. Rachel discovers that Anna was the mother of an adoptive daughter named Samara. She was capable of creating disturbing images in the minds animals, humans and other objects. Rachel is introduced to Anna's widower Richard. Richard insists that Rachel leave as when she starts asking questions about Samara.
